LEADERSHIP & SERVICE

American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Associate Member Council (AMC), Appointment from 2020-2023

I was a selected for a three appointment on the AACR Associate Member Council. My role in the AMC is to contribute to professional development activities by the ACCR for early career scientists and to promote diversity among cancer researchers from high school and beyond. I bring my perspective of a non-traditional dual degree candidate, with a diverse set of experiences and backgrounds and multidisciplinary research interests.

BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS (BNGAP), 2016-Present

BNGAP is a non-profit organization that aims to diversify the academic medicine workforce through pre-faculty development programs. I'm involved with BNGAP's scholarly initiatives and have contributed to the organization's first book: Succeeding in Academic Medicine, Chapter 7. The Significance of Mentorship.

AACR ASSOCIATE MEMBER COUNCIL MEMBER, 2020-2023

I am a newly elected member of the AMC of AACR. In this leadership role, I hope to bring my perspective of a non-traditional dual degree candidate, with a diverse set of experiences and backgrounds and multidisciplinary research interests. I hope to contribute to the development of programs that increase and promote diversity among cancer researchers from high school and beyond. Stay tune for future development!

CONQUER FOUNDATION OF ASCO, MEDICAL STUDENT ROTATION FOR UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS, 2019

I was selected as a recipient for the MSR Award as part of the ASCO Diversity in Oncology Initiative, funded by the Susan G. Komen for Cure, a program designed to facilitate the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities to the field of clinical oncology.

In this role, I shadowed Dr. Tara Sanft (left), a medical oncologist focused on breast cancer over a period of 4 months to learn about breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance. I was exposed to several subspecialties relevant to breast cancer survivorship, including fertility preservation, sexual health, physical therapy and long-term survivorship.

Mentoring future physician-scientists of color

I have engaged in numerous activities to inspire and motivate students of color to pursue careers in medicine and science including, the Doctors Back to School initiative developed by AAMC and hosting a workshop for college students about the physician-scientist career track at the 2018 CSTEP Conference.
I am especially interested in mentoring future physician-scientists of color. I often meet students at conferences and encourage them to connect with me for advice and tips on becoming physician scientists.

Global Health Initiatives

As a graduate student, I worked on various fundraising initiatives to contribute to the work of the nonprofit organization, Friends New England (FNE) International, in Nicaragua. In partnership with community leaders, we built homes (pictured) and learned about the local culture and history.

I have also worked in El Salvador and Buenos Aires, Argentina on medical and research initiatives, respectively, in partnership with local organizations and hospitals. Learn more about my research work in Argentina by going to the Past Work tab.
